巴比倫(Babylon)是世界著名古城遺址和人類文明的發祥地之一。它位于伊拉克首都巴格達以南９０公裏處，幼發拉底河右岸，建于公元前２３５０多年，是與古代中國、印度、埃及齊名的人類文明發祥地。

古巴比倫城垣雄偉、宮殿壯麗，充分顯示了古代兩河流域的建築水平。幼發拉底河自北向南縱貫全城，城內的主要建築埃薩吉納大廟及所屬的埃特梅蘭基塔廟，高達９１米，基座每邊長９１．４米，上有７層，每層都以不同色彩的釉磚砌成，塔頂有一座用釉磚建成、供奉瑪克篤克神金像的神廟。

城內古建築精華之一的“女神門”，高１２米、寬近２０米，門墻鑲嵌著形象生動的釉彩動物圖案，還有被稱為世界七大奇跡的“空中花園”，引人注目的人與獅子搏鬥的石刻雕像。

公元前５８６年（中國春秋的時候），猶太國被巴比倫滅亡，耶路撒冷全城的猶太人都成了俘虜，被稱為“巴比倫之囚”。６０年以後，巴比倫又被波斯征服了。波斯王居魯士釋放了囚禁在巴比倫的猶太人。但是，猶太人在回到耶路撒冷之後，並沒有過上和平的生活，不時的遭到外族的侵犯。猶太人在絕望中，只好把希望寄託於“彌賽亞”（救世主）的來臨。在“巴比倫之囚”５個世紀之後的公元６６年，羅馬總督提圖斯掠奪耶路撒冷神殿和宮殿裡的寶物，遭到猶太人的堅決反抗。鬥爭繼續了４年，到公元７０年，整個耶路撒冷被提圖斯淹沒在血泊中，他屠殺了全城的猶太人，另外有９．７萬人被變賣為奴隸，有的送到礦山採礦，有的成了羅馬鬥獸場的角鬥士。
